Zoo Train

All Aboard the Zoo Train!

Deep in the heart of the Lake Superior Zoo, next to our jungle playground, lies our happy zoo train. While it doesn't go to Timbuktu, it takes a nice curvy route along some of our most popular exhibits. Which color car will you choose to ride in, red, blue, green or yellow? Listen to the train whistle blow as the train pulls out of our depot and heads for the primate center. Wave to the animals as the conductor tells tales of the zoo and facts about our fabulous animal residents. Up to the primate center and past the barn you go, then up the hill to polar shores and around. Shout "hello" to Berlin the polar bear and Dolly the llama as the train glides ‘round the zoo and back into the station. Which color car will you ride next?!

The train runs during the week from mid-May until Labor Day, and then weekends only until Boo at the Zoo. Train tickets are $2 each. Age 2 and younger ride for free. Kids under 5 must be accompanied by and adult.

The Lake Superior Zoo has been part of the Twin Ports community since 1923, providing entertainment and recreation to its visitors. A favorite memory of the zoo experience back in the late 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s was riding the train. Since the 1970's, the Lake Superior Zoo has seen many changes in its animal collection, its purpose as a zoo, its conservation philosophy, and its responsibility to educate people about the natural world.

The Lake Superior Zoological Society is a partner of the Lake Superior Zoo, providing education and outreach programs, as well as guest and support services. The Society's mission is to: "facilitate understanding between people and the Earth." In an effort to offer a new and exciting experience for zoo visitors, the Zoological Society embarked on a campaign to bring the nostalgic train experience back to the zoo. Thanks to the many generous contributors and volunteers, an electric Wattman Mini Express train was purchased in 2006. The Zoo Train now travels the zoo grounds, educating riders about the zoo's history and the variety of animals in our care.

Today, families and children of all ages spend quality time at the Lake Superior Zoo, enjoying animal interactions and learning from their zoo experience. We wish to thank everyone who made a donation to this project. Special recognition is given to the listed businesses, individuals and organizations for their significant contributions and their support for the Lake Superior Zoo.
