Animals - Griggs Learning Center

Bearded Dragon - Joannie, Chachi, Jack & Mate
Pogona vitticeps 
Range: Eastern and Central Australia
Habitat: Arid woodland regions
Diet: Insects, small vertebrates, fruits, leaves, and flowers. At the zoo they eat fruits, vegetables, crickets, waxworms and mealworms.
Fun Facts:
  • When there is a lack of food, they may bury themselves and remain dormant until extreme conditions pass.  
  • When intimidated, they will flatten their bodies, puff their chin and open their mouths. 
  • Their body color may lighten or darken depending on mood or surroundings.
  • Both males and females have beards, or expandable throat pouches, which they will display during mating or territory disputes.
